Directorate of Backward Classes Welfare

About the Department

The Government has been implementing schemes and developmental programs for the advancement of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, and Denotified Communities their focus on the  Educational, Social and Economic advancement of these people. To channelise and to monitor the flow of benefits rate was formed in the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities, separate Directorate was formed in the year 1969 from the Harijan Welfare department.

In continuation, A separate Directorate for Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities has been  formed on 13th March 1989 for effective implementation of schemes for the Welfare of Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities.

From the year 2007, a Separate Directorate of Minorities has been bifurcated from the Backward Classes Directorate for the welfare of Minorities Peoples The Department of Backward Classes , Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities and Minorities headed by the Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu. At the state level, the Director of Backward Classes welfare is implementing the Backward Classes welfare schemes, The Director of Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities is implementing the Most Backward Classes and Denotified welfare schemes and the Director of Minorities Welfare is implementing the Minorities Welfare schemes at District level, District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officers have under the control of concerned District Collectors.
